Unpopular Opinion: We Need An Internet Sabbath

What if we turned off the internet one day a week? No scrolling, no notifications, just time to breathe and be present.

What if, just for one day a week, we turn off the internet? Hear me out šŸ§šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

Just imagine a day where:

  • You wake up and reach for a book instead of your phone.
  • You go on a walk without checking your notifications.
  • You have conversations that donā€™t revolve around whatā€™s trending online.
  • You give your brain space to just be, without having your thoughts being influenced by whatever it is you just watched on Tik Tok.

Wouldnā€™t that be kind ofā€¦ nice?

Iā€™m not saying we should all become hermits and reject technology oh. Having the internet is great, actually. Iā€™d even say itā€™s a privilege. It keeps us connected, entertains us, and gives us access to knowledge in ways the older generation never could have imagined. But at the same time, we’re drowning in information, overstimulated by content, and constantly plugged into a world of never-ending stream of entertainment.

I really donā€™t think that we, as a society, are coping well.

More people than ever before are suffering from anxiety, and then thereā€™s FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). I think you can trace all of this to our unhealthy relationship with social media. I donā€™t know why, but thereā€™s this need to always be ā€œin the knowā€.

However, do we really need this much access all the time? Or have we just convinced ourselves that we do?

We donā€™t need to know everything happening everywhere, all the time. We donā€™t need to listen to every new song, or watch every show, or read every book the second it drops.

Businesses do this all the time. Some donā€™t open on Sundays. Others take a break towards the end of the year to regroup and reset. So why donā€™t we, as individuals, get off days too?

Take a break! Honestly? I think weā€™d all be better for it. Connect with the people in your life, with the things that bring us joy outside of screens.

The world wouldnā€™t end. We wonā€™t suddenly fall behind in life. If anything, weā€™ll come back feeling more refreshed, more present. And maybe, just maybe, the internet will be just fine without us for one day.

But hey, thatā€™s just my unpopular opinion.

What do you think? Would you start having an internet sabbatical? Or do you find this idea impossible?

  1. Taking some time off your phone (internet) is one way to improve mental health. Sometimes our minds take in information / knowledge that we donā€™t even need ā€¦ so yeh, I go ghost from the internet when i need to

  2. I totally agree with you!! I sometimes do it myself,I think it would be really nice if we do it together as a society.

  3. We really need to sometimes stay of the internet so as to get refreshed because it is not good for our health. Too much of everything they say is bad. Sometimes people abandon meaningful things they ought to do simply because they are carried away by whatever they come across on the internet

  4. I have a sabbath from certain social media apps, but I havenā€™t tried a total internet sabbath before. It will be interesting to see if I will survive without WhatsApp and Netflix for a day šŸ˜‚

  5. I’ve tried this once…
    It was worth it.
Sometimes we just need a breath of ‘fresh air’, clear our heads and get more in tune with our immediate environment.

  6. Iā€™ve actually thought of doing this, not even for a day but for a full week. I just need to get a small phone to put my call line so I can completely dump my phone.

    • Baby Tega.
I agree with you absolutely. We should take time off the internet once in a while.
Although I have done it on certain platforms but have not considered it entirely on internet.
I think taking sabatical from the internet for certain duration periodically is strongly advisable.
Indulgence on internet & periodical sabatical have ther consequences.
      Thank you.

  7. Indeed..
We more than ever before need to be in touch with the real world, not reels.
It’s a practice that needs to be widely preached. We need to connect with ourselves and with the community of people.

    Thank you for the post.

  8. I have made it a habit to regularly take time off from social media. I find that disconnecting from the digital world helps me clear my head and regain focus.

It’s a deliberate choice I make to prioritize my mental wellbeing and give myself space to think about some other things around me.

But When I’m not scrolling through social media, you can find me tuning into my favorite radio shows.

I love listening to the radio and discovering new music, stories, and ideas. It’s a great way for me to unwind and stay informed about what’s happening in the world.

Evenself, I think there should be a total regulation of our media space and its content because alot of misinformation is going round and people are just taking them hook, line and Sinker.

  9. I totally agree with you and I think we as individuals should take out deliberate efforts to connect with our physical world more often…thanks for this piece
